What is it for?
The Cheatsheet is there to help you find the right instrument for your melody.
Once you have your melody in your head (or on paper, in your DAW, or on your instrument), use the Cheatsheet as a decision guide:
- First, decide on the register based on the character you want your melody to have — dark and heavy, warm and balanced, or bright and exposed.
- Then choose an instrument whose natural sweet spot lies in that range and supports that character.
It also helps you avoid writing in ranges that are technically possible, but uncomfortable or unidiomatic for the instrument.
By the way, you can print the Cheatsheet and hang it in your studio as a quick visual reference. If you do so, I would love to see it. Feel free to send me a photo at hello@leo-brennauer.com
